What is Dance Movement Therapy and How Can it Help My Child?

So, I’m signing my kid up for a “dance class” to help with their anxiety and/or hyperactivity?  Not exactly…. Dance is known to some as a performing art, to others as a way to exercise, or a way to engage an active child. Dance Movement Therapy is a way for children to communicate and express themselves when traditional forms of communication are hindered by behavioral or cognitive barriers.

Kids are natural movers and shakers and so it makes perfect sense that dance can be an inviting and non threatening mode of self-expression. Especially kids who are highly active, learn best with their whole body through experience and action; channeling their emotional energy through dance movement therapy can be so complimentary.
